Boudoir sessions in Chicago and the surrounding area are something that I am VERY passionate about as a photographer. Some of the most popular questions I am asked when prepping for a session with a client are questions on what to wear to a boudoir session, which is what led me to create this blog! A boudoir session is an empowering and intimate experience that celebrates your unique beauty. Choosing the right attire can enhance your confidence and create outfits that become amazing tools to use throughout your session. Lets go over my top tips on planning out your boudoir session outfits so you’re ready to book your session.
When you begin to think about what you want to wear to your Chicago boudoir session, it’s fun to pull some inspiration. Whether you pull information from your favorite movie, Pinterest, magazines or from your everyday wardrobe, there are so many options to choose from. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and try things that aren’t traditionally lingerie. Everyday items that you have in your wardrobe can easily become sexy with a little manipulation. Think oversized sweaters with cute panties, your favorite pair of jeans without a top, or your favorite t-shirt!
When it comes to choosing your outfits, I typically suggest using two outfits while incorporating layers into each. It’s fun to have two different vibes for your outfits, maybe one with a lace lingerie piece and then the other your favorite denim jacket with some panties. Having layers to these outfits also allows for some flexibility and a few different looks from the same outfit. Let’s dig a little deeper into choosing your lingerie, incorporating layers, and what accessories to use for your boudoir session in Chicago.
When it comes to choosing lingerie, you’ll want to make sure to choose some that focus and accentuate on the parts of your body that you love the most.
– Choose lingerie that suits your body type: Consider your body shape and select pieces that flatter your curves. For instance, a corset can create an hourglass figure, while babydoll lingerie can be great for adding a touch of playfulness.
– Opt for comfortable yet alluring materials: Silk, satin, lace, and velvet are popular choices that feel luxurious yet comfortable on your skin.
– Play with colors and textures: Darker shades like black, navy, and burgundy can create a slimming effect, while vibrant colors can add a pop of excitement. Experiment with different textures and patterns to find what you love the most.
– Accentuate your assets: Highlight your favorite features to shift the attention away from areas of insecurity. For example, if you love your legs, consider wearing a garter belt or thigh-high stockings to draw attention to them.
When it comes to choosing other clothing items to incorporate into your session, I recommend exploring your closet and trying on different pieces solo. Items like jeans, cardigans, button ups, sweaters, slips, robes and even shoes are all amazing options for layers during your boudoir session. Think about the things you love to wear from your closet to add a personal touch to your Chicago boudoir session!
Another incredible way to add some depth and a bit of a personal touch to your Chicago boudoir session are different accessories.
– Add layers with robes or sheer fabrics: Robes can be a great addition to your lingerie ensemble, allowing you to transition between different looks and adding an elegant touch. Sheer fabrics like chiffon or lace can create a sense of mystery while providing coverage.
– Experiment with jewelry: try out jewelry that compliments your outfit and enhances your features. Long necklaces can elongate your torso, while delicate bracelets can draw attention to your wrists.
– Consider props: Incorporate props that reflect your personality and interests. This could be anything from a feather boa, a vintage camera, or even baking your favorite treats!
When it comes to prepping your outfits for your Chicago boudoir session, there are a handful of things that I remind each of my clients to do!
Removing the tags from your lingerie and outfits is super important and beyond helpful for your Chicago boudoir session. It’s important to not only remove the price tags on the item, but if you’re planning on using an open cardigan or a robe with a washing instructions tag, those should be removed as well. You will be moving around quite a bit with the clothing items, and they can be a distraction during the session and in your photos!
The week before your session, take a little time and steam or iron the clothing you plan to wear throughout the session. This will eliminate wrinkles and give you an opportunity to look over the clothing and remove any tags that you might have missed.
When transporting items, especially silk, you will want to make sure to use a hanger and garment bag to bring your clothing in. You just steamed or ironed them so you really don’t want to get your articles all wrinkly again! This will also make changing much easier during your session as your items will be out and ready for you.
If you plan to take any photos without a top or bra, I suggest not wearing a bra to the session and taking those images first. This way you won’t have bra lines during that portion of the session. If you’re getting your hair done for your session you will also want to be sure to wear something that buttons or zips up the front so that you don’t mess up your hair while changing once you arrive.
Past those two tips, I always suggest starting in whichever outfit you feel the most confident in! Starting off your session feeling good and confident makes such a big difference when it comes to your photos. If you haven’t done a boudoir session before, like any other session, it can take you a second when you start the session to get used to it. Starting off the session feeling confident and excited helps you to get a feel for the session and get comfortable posing. Speaking of feeling comfortable and confident…
Boudoir sessions are sessions of self love and having fun. As your Chicago boudoir photographer I want to work with you to make sure you feel the MOST confident during your session and overall just keep your excitement high throughout the experience. Here are some of my top tips for keeping your confidence and comfort high during your boudoir session.
– Prioritize comfort: Feeling comfortable is essential for a successful boudoir session. Ensure that the lingerie you choose fits well, allows for easy movement, and makes you feel at ease.
– Practice self-care: Before the session, take time for yourself. Engage in activities that help you relax and boost your confidence, such as getting a massage, doing yoga, or listening to your favorite music.
– Embrace your uniqueness: Boudoir photography is about celebrating your individuality and embracing your body. Remember that there is no one-size-fits-all definition of beauty, and your confidence will shine through in your photographs.
As I mentioned before, Chicago boudoir sessions are such amazing sessions for expressing your style, celebrating your body, and celebrating your beauty! Comfort is THE MOST important thing when prepping for your boudoir session, so be sure to follow all of the steps listed above when deciding what to wear to your boudoir session. With the right attire, mindset and space, your boudoir session will document your beauty and leave you with STUNNING photos for you to look back and love yourself with for the rest of your life!
