Adding a newborn to your family is a HUGE moment. It turns your world completely upside down, but in the best way possible. It’s a time of love, a time of growth, and a time you’ll want to remember for the rest of your life. For these reasons, and more which we’re here to cover in this article, capturing newborn photos in the comfort of your own home is something I recommend to many new parents. Let’s take a look at 6 of my top reasons to have a newborn session and why you should have one in your own home.

1. Change of Clothes Nearby

Let’s face it, accidents happen, especially with newborns. They’re not only still figuring out this big new world they’re in, but also how their body functions! With this learning comes a lot of trial and error, and in turn many accidents. That’s why taking newborn photos in the comfort of your own home can be a huge help. In the event of an accident you can be sure that new, clean clothes are nearby and ready to go for you. It’s also fun to have multiple outfits for a session!

2. Comfortable Environment

With how crazy life becomes when you welcome a newborn into your life, having your session in a comfortable space is SO important. Your home is YOUR space, you know it better than anyone else and it’s the place you feel most comfortable in no matter what. Most people have some anxiety when it comes to having their photos taken, even if it isn’t their first time doing so. Adding a newborn into the equation, especially if they’re your first kid, takes that anxiety to the next level! It’s for this reason that taking newborn photos in the comfort of your own home can really help to put your nerves at ease since you’re in the space you feel the most yourself in.

One of the most important reasons to have newborn photos taken in the first place is to capture your baby as they are now. Why I recommend having your newborn photos taken in your own home though is so that you can capture your LIFE as it is now! Yes, chaos and all, this chapter of your life is one that you should capture and cherish. The craziness that is bringing a life into this world, raising them, and growing as a family alongside them is something that you should be able to look back on in full. That means the baby cuddles and giggles, but also the toys all over the floor and the laundry hamper stacked to the ceiling. ALL of these details are what make this time in your lives what it is, and that’s worth remembering.

Any parent will tell you that when you have a child they are going to start growing like crazy! It’s honestly incredible what the human body is able to do and how quickly we’re able to develop into our own tiny humans. This rapid development means a lot of items that your newborn uses on a day to day basis will be outgrown very quickly. Having your newborn photos taken in your own home not only captures your life at this moment, but also all these little details of your child’s development. Whether it’s the nursery you have set up, the clothes they wear, or their baby blanket they love to snuggle with, all of these items are so important to your child’s life right now. Having photos capturing this so you can look back on them and remember every little detail is equally important.

Whether your newborn breastfeeds or you use formula, taking newborn photos in your own home makes the process SO much simpler! Everything you need is right there for you. No need to pack a bottle, prepare the formula ahead of time, or anything! And if you are breastfeeding then you can do so in the comfort and privacy of your own home.

6. Moody Lighting

One thing I have always loved about in home sessions is the moody lighting that comes with the sun shining through your windows. Just check out the lighting from Taylor and Joe’s in-home maternity session to see what I mean! Especially as the sun begins to set, this lighting becomes even more fun to work with. While outdoor photography usually gets most of the praise when it comes to golden hour lighting, I feel indoor photography during golden hour deserves to be part of the conversation as well!
